To begin, record the weight of the candle. Next, light the candle and let it burn for a calculated amount of time. For example, if it’s a 3″ diameter candle, let it burn for 3 hours or for a 4″ candle, burn it for 4 hours. The longer the initial burn time the more accurate you results will be. Afterward, weigh the candle and once again record the weight. With the gathered information you can now calculate the burn rate (oz. per hour). Below is an example of the calculation:

((Weight Before Burn – Weight After Burn) / Hours Burned) = ((16oz – 15.5oz) / 3 hours) = 0.167 oz /hr burn rate

You can also compute the burn time of a candle in a jar or tin but the process can be tricky. Our goal is find the weight of just the wax of the candle. In most situations, you have to take the manufacturer’s word that the size of the candle (i.e. 16 oz candle) is the weight of the wax in the candle and not the wax including the container. The formula below shows how to calculate the burn time of a 16 oz. candle.

Candle Wax Weight / Burn Rate = 16 oz / 0.167 oz/hr = 95.8 hours of total burn time

Keep in mind that this is a calculated estimate and will provide a close but not exact representation of the actual burn time. Furthermore, all of the candle will not burn because there will always be wax left on the walls and bottom of the container.
